Why are Christians opposed to transgender bathrooms?

By S. Michael Houdmann, Got Questions Ministries

It is amazing that this is even the hot political / social topic of the day. How did "Do you agree with people urinating and defecating in the bathrooms of their choice" become the dividing line between social acceptability and bigotry? Why are we even talking about changing the bathroom policy that has existed for millennia on behalf of the exceedingly small percentage of society that is gender dysphoric?

Over the years at GotQuestions.org, we have worked with numerous people who are confused about their gender. While I may have a different view of the causes of transgenderism, and a very different "prescription" for what should be done about gender identity disorder, I have nothing but compassion for those truly suffering with gender dysphoria. I cannot imagine how difficult and confusing it must be. At the same time, forcing the rest of society to blindly ignore gender differences is not the answer.

There is truly only one aspect of this bathroom issue that I feel very strongly about: men should not be allowed in women's bathrooms. I do not care if a man thinks he is a 16-year-old Chinese lesbian; he does not belong in women's bathrooms. I don't think women who self-identify as men should be allowed in men's bathrooms either. Nor do I understand why they would want to use a men's bathroom. One word: "Ewww!" But, women in men's bathrooms is a very different issue for me than men in women's bathrooms.

Why? Simple! Sexual predators!

I am absolutely not saying that transgender and/or gender dysphoric people are sexual predators. The vast majority of them are not. I am saying that there are heterosexual and pedophilic men out there who would absolutely love the freedom to enter women's restrooms in order to look for potential victims. And, to think, all they would have to do to gain access to a women's bathroom is "self-identify" as a woman.

Do we really want to do anything that could even potentially make things easier for sexual predators? Do we really want to give men access to private rooms that women and children frequent (often alone), with the only qualification being that they must self-identify as a woman?

It absolutely blows my mind that anyone thinks this is a good idea!

How is it even possible? First, they do not understand the human condition. Not understanding the depravity of humanity has huge consequences. Second, acquiescing to each and every demand of extreme LGBT activists has become the standard of social acceptance in the progressive mindset.

Should a man who has undergone a sex change / gender reassignment surgery be allowed to use a women's bathroom? Sure, I guess so, because there is no better alternative. But, that is not what we are talking about. Again, what the extreme LGBT activists want is for "self-identification" to be the only standard for what bathroom people use.

What in the world is wrong with people? Oh yeah, sin.
There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one. Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit. The poison of vipers is on their lips. Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood; ruin and misery mark their ways, and the way of peace they do not know. There is no fear of God before their eyes. Romans 3:10-18

Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them. Romans 1:28-32
I am not directing the above two Scripture quotations towards individuals who are truly dealing with gender dysphoria. Rather, it is directed towards those who are pushing this inane and asinine agenda. Since the original writing of this post, the agenda has expanded from bathrooms to also include locker rooms.

So, in order to give comfort to the less than one-tenth of one percent of the population that is genuinely transgender, we have to put 50 percent of the population at greater risk of attack from sexual predators/perverts and put 100 percent of the population at risk of embarrassment, and possibly even psychological harm, from having to shower and dress alongside people who are, physiologically, the opposite gender?

"Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools." (Romans 1:22, NLT)
